Computer Career Training Courses UK Compared

July 4th, 2009
by Jason Kendall

Nice One! Hitting upon this feature suggests you’re thinking about your future, and if you’re considering retraining that means you’ve taken it further than almost everybody else. Did you know that a small minority of us consider ourselves contented at work - yet most will take no corrective action. We implore you to be different and make a start - you have the rest of your life to enjoy it.

With regard to individual courses, seek out someone who will be able to guide you on which area will be right for you. An advisor who will take time to ask questions about your likes and dislikes, and discover what type of job will be right for you:

* Do you operate better working alone or is being part of a team an essential criteria for you?

* Building and Banking are a little shaky today, so which sector would give you the most options?

* When you’ve done all your re-training, would you like your skills to serve you till you retire?

* Are you confident that your industry training course will offer you employment opportunities, and offer the chance to allow you to work up to the time you want to stop?

We would advise you to find out more about Information Technology - there are greater numbers of jobs than people to do them, plus it’s a rare career choice where the sector is on the grow. Contrary to the opinions of certain people, it isn’t just geeks looking at screens the whole day (if you like the sound of that though, they do exist.) Most positions are occupied by ordinary people who enjoy a very nice lifestyle due to better than average wages.

Including examinations with the course fee and offering an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is a popular marketing tool with many training course providers. Consider the facts:

Of course it isn’t free - you’re still being charged for it - the price has simply been included in the whole thing. Students who enter their exams one by one, funding them one at a time are in a much stronger position to qualify at the first attempt. They are aware of their spending and prepare more appropriately to make sure they’re ready.

Go for the best offer you can find when you take the exam, and hang on to your cash. You’ll then be able to select where you do the examinations - meaning you can choose a local testing centre. A lot of current training providers secure huge profits because they’re getting paid for exam fees early then hoping that you won’t take them all. Remember, in the majority of cases of ‘exam guarantees’ - they control when and how often you are allowed to do a re-take. Subsequent exam attempts are only authorised at the company’s say so.

With the average price of Pro-metric and VUE examinations coming in at approximately 112 pounds in Great Britain, it’s common sense to fund them one by one. It’s not in the student’s interests to fork out hundreds or thousands of pounds for exams when enrolling on a course. A commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools are actually the key to your success.

Throw out a salesperson that pushes one particular program without a thorough investigation to assess your abilities as well as experience level. They should be able to select from a wide-enough stable of training programs so they’re able to give you an appropriate solution. With a bit of live experience or some accreditation, you may find that your starting point is now at a different level to a new student. Starting with a basic PC skills course first will sometimes be the most effective way to get into your computer programme, depending on your skill level at the moment.

So, why is it better to gain commercially accredited qualifications as opposed to the usual academic qualifications taught at schools, colleges or universities? Corporate based study (in industry terminology) is far more specialised and product-specific. The IT sector has realised that such specialised knowledge is necessary to handle a technically advancing commercial environment. CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA are the dominant players. Higher education courses, for instance, often get bogged down in too much loosely associated study - with much too broad a syllabus. Students are then held back from understanding the specific essentials in enough depth.

In simple terms: Accredited IT qualifications provide exactly what an employer needs - the title says it all: as an example - I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Planning and Maintaining a Windows 2003 Infrastructure’. So companies can identify just what their needs are and what certifications will be suitable to deal with those needs.

Many individuals don’t catch on to what IT can do for us. It’s stimulating, innovative, and means you’re doing your bit in the gigantic wave of technology that will affect us all over the next generation. We’ve only just begun to get an inclination of how technology is going to shape our lives. The internet will significantly alter the way we view and interact with the entire world over the coming years.

Let’s not forget that typical remuneration in IT across the UK is noticeably greater than remuneration packages in other industries, therefore you’ll be in a good position to receive much more as an IT specialist, than you’d expect to earn elsewhere. Due to the technological sector increasing year on year, it’s looking good that the requirement for qualified professionals will continue to boom for a good while yet.

If you’re like many of the students we talk to then you’re quite practically minded - the ‘hands-on’ person. If you’re like us, the unfortunate chore of reading reference guides is something you’ll make yourself do if you have to, but you’d hate it. Consider interactive, multimedia study if learning from books is not your thing. Many studies have proved that we remember much more when we receive multi-sensorial input, and we put into practice what we’ve been studying.

Modern training can now be done at home via interactive discs. Instructor-led tutorials will mean you’ll absorb the modules, one by one, via the demonstrations and explanations. Knowledge can then be tested by practicing and interacting with the software. Any company that you’re considering must be able to demonstrate a few samples of their courseware. Expect video tutorials, instructor led classes and many interactive sections.

Many companies provide purely on-line training; and although this is okay the majority of the time, think what will happen when you don’t have access to the internet or you get intermittent problems and speed issues. It’s much safer to rely on actual CD or DVD ROMs which will not have these problems.

Child Safety Online

July 3rd, 2009
by Marion Jones

What can we say about the world children live in these days? Sexed-up television, pornographic Internet sites and videos and violent board games. A world lowering its standards, values, and morals each day, surrounds our children.

What is even worse is that we cannot use Parental Controls any more to keep our children away from websites of an adult nature. Children nowadays are advanced in technology, and sometimes more so than their parents. How can we protect our children against online dangers? How can we as parents provide safety for our children, while battling the corruption going on worldwide?

Parental Controls are available on most types of Internet software, yet today, children are skilled at by-passing these Parental Controls. So, what can we do? We can guard our kids by overseeing their activities on the Internet closely.

How to use parental controls: It depends on which Internet provider you have, however, I will speak only of the Internet providers I am aware of, since not all programs are the same. To use AOL Parental Controls, you will have to go to Safety at the Toolbar and click on Parental Controls.

Once you get there, you will see a drop-down list of available usernames. Search for your child’s username and click on it. You will see a popup window appear. Click on ‘Edit Web Control’ and then click ‘Kids Only’, and close. Now your child is guarded against Internet sites that hold potential dangers.

Chat rooms can be very serious threats to children, since anyone can go into these rooms. Often predators frequent these areas, in order to entice children into their dangerous network. In the AOL program, click on ‘Safety’ and then click on ‘Parental Controls’.

In the same way, click on the ‘Edit IM Controls’, ‘Edit E-mail Controls’, and ‘Edit Chat Control’ and complete the same steps as you did to establish the ‘Parental Controls’.

It is wise to install passwords. Passwords will offer additional protection and safety for your child. Do not give the child the passwords, because this will give the child control over the Internet connection, and the child might even reset the controls.

It is also wise to activate your ‘Popup Controllers’ too, since if you do not turn on the controls, pop ups could carry something that will corrupt your system or popup adult content, which your child will see if online. You can go into ‘AOL Safety’ at the toolbar to start these popup controls.

If you are using Internet Explorer, open a page. Click on ‘Tools’ at the top menu, click ‘Popup Blocker’ and then click ‘Popup Blocker Settings’. Read the information carefully and set the program at medium. Medium is standard and will block most pop ups. If you put the settings higher than medium you might find it difficult to open websites for browsing.

Some of the dangers presented to children online include: Internet Porn; Child Porn; Child Sexual Abuse; Mobile Porn; and more. So, your child is in danger, and if you want to master safety, you will have to monitor, and take steps to safeguard your child against online dangers.

According to recent studies, students have encountered sexual malpractices through webcams, instant messengers, and mobile phones. Additional studies show that pornographic websites out-rate CBS, ABC, and NBC, thus making more profit than each of these television channels in a year. The studies claim that the largest group that views porn sites are children. These children are between the ages of twelve and seventeen.

The results revealed that around 74% of all the porn sites had uncontrolled banners, while another 66% of the websites did not issue adult content warnings. Furthermore, another 11% of the sites did not have ’sexually explicit content’ warnings and 25% boxed in their visitors by not letting them leave their websites. Only 3% of the websites out of more than 14 millions adult sites requested adult permission for minors. So, it is vital to protect your child now!

Boy Dog Names

July 2nd, 2009
by Gail Jones

Dog owners will tell you that there is no proven formula for choosing a good name for a new dog. Whether they have to think of girl or boy dog names, usually they will choose something that sounds cool or a name they like rather than putting some thought into what the name really means. Popular boy dog names have a variety of meanings, but more often than not the meaning will not suit the dog it is given to. Below is a quick guide to the top five boy dog names and what they actually mean.

Undoubtedly, one of the first things you do when you get a new dog or puppy is think up a dog name for him or her. For most dog owners, this actually takes little thought. They just pick a dog name at random and that is the name by which the poor mite will be known forever. However, there are certain issues that ought to be taken into consideration when going through dog names in order to make sure that you choose the right one.

First of all, dogs can sense attitude and tone of voice better than we can. If you pick a dog name for comic effect or after someone you don’t like, your dog will know by your tone of voice that something is not right. As a result, their attitudes may change towards you or they may refuse to respond to your commands. Dogs’ names should mean something but should not hinder their training, so you should really take the decision of the dog name carefully.

While dogs are very intelligent animals, they can’t process the same amount of data that we can. Therefore, dog names should not be more than two syllables long. If they are more than that, most dogs will not respond. Max, Sam, Becky, Lady, Molly and the like are excellent dog names because they are short and the names are easily heard. They respond to these dog names and that will help your probability of training them successfully.

However, dogs’ names should help them form an identity of their own. Common names don’t really allow them to do that, so finding something simple but unusual can help their characters a great deal without damaging their ability to respond to a command.

Max: This is perhaps the greatest boy dog name and the meaning is surely the reason why many people pick it for their mut. It literally means “the most”. After all, every dog owner thinks that their dog is the ‘most’.

Jake: Jake is short for Jacob, which means “victor”. This is a suitable boy dog name, if your puppy has taken over the house within minutes of setting feet inside of it!

Buddy: Buddy is a variation of Budd, which means “messenger”. This boy dog name would be apt for a working dog or one you might train to bring in the newspaper of a morning. It is quite a popular boy dog name and can be very widely heard throughout the USA.

Bailey: The boy dog name Bailey is French and means “steward”. This is pretty suitable if your dog is responsible and sensible, so it is probably suitable for a Labrador or collie puppy, for example!

Sam: Sam seems to mean “an answer to prayers”. This is a good name for dogs that are obedient, easy to train and are very little work!

Few new dog owners consult a name’s meaning when choosing a boy dog’s name, so instead of just going ahead with your first idea, it would be worth taking the time to choose a dog’s name that is really apt for your dog. After all, it doesn’t cost you anything to spend some time considering your dog’s name.

MCSA Study Across The UK Revealed

July 1st, 2009
by Jason Kendall

If you’re looking for an MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator) training program, be aware that companies offer quite diverse courses; some are much better than others. You’ll come across a variety of courses, whether you’re a beginner, or a professional looking to gain acknowledged certifications. Each scenario requires a specialised course, so pay attention to check you’re on the right one before making a start. Search for a training provider that talks with you so they get to know what you’re looking to do, and can help you identify what you’ll be doing, long before they discuss course options.

So, why should we consider qualifications from the commercial sector rather than more traditional academic qualifications gained through the state educational establishments? The IT sector is of the opinion that for mastery of skill sets for commercial use, certified accreditation from such organisations as Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe is closer to the mark commercially - for much less time and money. The training is effectively done by concentrating on the skills that are really needed (along with a proportionate degree of associated knowledge,) instead of going into the heightened depths of background non-specific minutiae that computer Science Degrees often do - to pad out the syllabus.

Just like the advert used to say: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. The company just needs to know where they have gaps, and then match up the appropriate exam numbers as a requirement. Then they know that anyone who applies can do the necessary work.

Starting with the idea that it makes sense to find the market that sounds most inviting first, before we can weigh up which training course ticks the right boxes, how do we decide on the right direction? Flicking through a list of IT job-titles is no use whatsoever. Most of us don’t really appreciate what our next-door neighbours do at work each day - so we’re in the dark as to the subtleties of a specific IT job. To work through this, a discussion is necessary, covering many different aspects:

* The sort of individual you consider yourself to be - what kind of jobs you enjoy, and on the other side of the coin - what you definitely don’t enjoy.

* Why you’re looking at getting involved with IT - is it to overcome some personal goal like being self-employed for example.

* What salary and timescale needs you may have?

* Getting to grips with what the normal career areas and markets are - including what sets them apart.

* The time and energy you’ll have available to spend on the training program.

At the end of the day, the best way of understanding everything necessary is through an in-depth discussion with an advisor who understands the market well enough to lead you to the correct decision.

You should remember: the actual training program or the accreditation is not the ultimate goal; the career that you’re getting the training for is. Too many training companies over-emphasise just the training course. It’s a sad fact, but the majority of trainees begin programs that seem amazing from the prospectus, but which provides a job that doesn’t satisfy. Just ask several university students for examples.

It’s essential to keep your focus on what it is you’re trying to achieve, and create a learning-plan from that - avoid getting them back-to-front. Stay on target - making sure you’re training for an end-result that will keep you happy for many years. It’s worth seeking help from an advisor who knows the commercial realities of the sector you’ve chosen, and will be able to provide ‘A day in the life of’ explanation of the job being considered. These things are incredibly important because you obviously have to know if you’re going down the right road.

You have to make sure that all your qualifications are current and commercially required - don’t bother with courses which end up with a useless in-house certificate or plaque. From the perspective of an employer, only the major heavyweights such as Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco or Adobe (to give some examples) provide enough commercial weight. Anything less won’t make the grade.

A service offered by some training providers is job placement assistance. This is to help you get your first commercial position. Ultimately it’s not as hard as some people make out to get employment - as long as you’ve got the necessary skills and qualifications; because there’s still a great need for IT skills in the UK today.

You would ideally have CV and Interview advice and support though; additionally, we would recommend all students to update their CV right at the beginning of their training - don’t delay till you’ve finished your exams. You’ll often find that you’ll land your first position whilst still on the course (even in the early stages). If your course details aren’t on your CV (and it’s not being looked at by employers) then you’re not even going to be known about! Actually, an independent and specialised local recruitment consultant or service (who will, of course, be keen to place you to receive their commission) will perform better than any sector of a centralised training facility. They should, of course, also be familiar with the local area and commercial needs.

Various students, apparently, spend evenings and weekends on their training and studies (sometimes for years), and then just stop instead of attempting to secure a good job. Introduce yourself… Do everything you can to put yourself out there. Don’t expect a job to just fall into your lap.

DIY Solar Power is too Futuristic?

July 1st, 2009
by Alexis Jameson

The kind of energy that renews itself after use are the things in nature that have been around for eons and will be around for eternity. When the average household turns on a light switch, many take for granted the light will come on. So with everyone taking electricity for granted, imagine the chaos if one day there was no electricity available. That is why it is imperative for this young adult generation to explore classes that teach installation and use of do it yourself solar power.

Any type of renewable energy has been in existence for a long time. People are not as involved in learning about this as they should be. Nature provides all the energy anyone living on the Earth should need to live comfortably. Not only from the nature aspect, but think of the money that would be saved monthly with no electric bill.

While in the salvage yard, look around for some tubing. Tubing is usually made of copper, because copper allows water to stay hot. Once the water is inside the tubing, the sun heats it. The energy is burning inside the tubing, which makes heat. Heat makes energy.

The energy then passes via a wire through a couple of regular car batteries into an inverter. After the power leaves the inverter, it is separated into dc power and ac power. Both methods of energy are used as one. The only way to tell how much current is being rejected by the fuse boxes and put back into the regular electricity lines is by a specified meter. These meters will run in both clockwise and counter clockwise. The counter clockwise operating direction adds up how much energy the main power company will compensate you for having solar energy.

Just because you have chosen to make solar power your sole energy source, does not mean you are completely on your own power source. The electric company lines will be attached. All this means is you must be phoned in case of an emergency repair. The electric company will instruct you to turn your solar source off, to keep unwanted electric current from flowing into their energy source. If this link is not interrupted while service is being performed on the line. A lineman can be killed.

In conclusion, solar energy has its benefits. Not only is solar energy the cheapest way to provide power to your home, it is the best for the environment.

Spokane Industries Precision Investment Castings Division

June 29th, 2009
by Jeff Kuntz

Manufacturing Design Engineers often specify machining metal parts out of stock material that in practicality would be more cost effective and efficiently produced as an Investment Casting. This happens because of the familiarity and abundance of machining facilities compared to the less understood advantages and relatively small quantity of Investment Casting operations. Similarly, parts designed as fabrications are often well suited to conversion to castings. In that never-ending quest to increase efficiencies and lower costs, companies are discovering the value Investment Castings can bring to their product lines.

SPOKANE INDUSTRIES specializes in bringing near net shape casting production to the marketplace through our Precision Investment Castings Division. SPOKANE PRECISION CASTINGS can minimize dimensional tolerances without machining or other subcontracting methods so that you may have a finished product ready for rapid assembly. Were able to produce parts that weigh from 80 pounds to as little as a few grams. In many cases, injecting multiple pieces or several different parts in a single die saves additional operations and reduces costs.

SPOKANE PRECISION CASTINGS offers an almost endless array of alloys. Carbon Steels, Low Alloy, 17-4, Tool Steels, Precipitation Hardening Alloys, Silicon Brass, 300 and 400 Series Stainless Steels, and most other air melts are common. We offer an endless number of commercial applications from the food, automotive, dental, military, and oil industries, to name a few. Our real forte is to get involved at the engineering genesis by taking multiple metal components that may currently be machined or fabricated and design them together. We can then create a single near net shape casting. This eliminates multiple operations, saves time, energy and money - to bring savings to the bottom line for our customers.

Converting fabrications to castings brings a multitude of benefits to a manufacturer. Investment Castings can oftentimes be designed much stronger, with less material, creating less weight and at the same time lower failure rates. In addition, where there are multiple parts creating a fabrication, a single casting can often times be designed to do the entire job. This results in assembly time savings, lower overhead, simplified workflow and improves uniformity and aesthetics.

SPOKANE PRECISION CASTINGS workforce is highly cross-trained. Employees are encouraged to move from department to department throughout our production areas where strong visual and written controls facilitate process standardization. SPOKANE PRECISION CASTINGS has implemented Lean Manufacturing processes where continuous improvement is ongoing and reducing variables ultimately drives lower costs.

SPOKANE PRECISION CASTINGS is augmented by in-house capabilities including machining, x-ray, full dimensional layout, spectrometer and Non-Destructive Testing of mechanical properties. We also perform Magnetic Particle Inspection, liquid penetrant and utilize heat-treat facilities both internally and contractually.

For 18 years SPOKANE PRECISION CASTINGS has been part of the Spokane Industries family. SPOKANE INDUSTRIES, its parent company, has been in the foundry industry since 1952. This offers full access to a large and diversified engineering department with the latest in Flow Test Analysis and CAD/CAM . We accept your CAD/CAM files and a large array of electonic files as well as so that we can rapidly prototype and meet your specifications and schedules.

Jeff Kuntz, Spokane Precision Castings Production Manager states, SPOKANE PRECISION CASTINGS has been working with industries from military grade castings ” like Class II Armor Certified, to dental equipment castings with high esthetic appeal. Were accustomed to producing quantities that range from low volume/high variety to commodity products that range up to 80 thousand Investment Castings every month. Our goal is to exceed the customers expectations at every opportunity.

The combination of our in-house capabilities along with some local strategic partners help us stand alone in the marketplace and adds to our ability to help our customers meet their ever changing needs. Starting with our customers drawings and vision, we strive to meet all of your Investment Casting needs.

Bottom line ” faster R & D, first articles get to you faster and ultimately saves you time and money. Isnt that what its really all about?

Steel and Iron Casting Dimensional Verification

June 29th, 2009
by Richard Palmer

One key benefit of steel and iron castings is the ability to be formed into complex, organic shapes that are not easily duplicated in fabricated, or even forged parts. Because of this, castings can achieve significant cost and labor savings, but these complex shapes can be quite difficult to inspect with traditional dimensional inspection techniques. The typical dimensional testing toolbox begs for a few specialty items to complete the task adequately.

In addition to the complex shapes that are common for castings, an iron or steel cast surface will be textured by the molding material that the molten metal was poured into, usually bonded sand. This surface texture can affect the accuracy and repeatability of the inspection if care is not taken during the measurement process.

One important issue that complicates the dimensional inspection of iron and steel castings is the draft angle that is required on patterns that are used in sand molds. Draft angles are a manufacturing requirement of the sand mold process that allows the pattern to be drawn back out of the sand after the impression is made. These draft angles are rarely shown on casting blueprints and solid models but are usually noted on the prints as: Draft not to exceed 1.5 Degrees, or something similar.

The dimensional inspection of castings has traditionally relied on the standard hand-tools that reside in most inspectors toolboxes: calipers, height gauges, radius gauges, tape measures, snap gauges, etc. These hand tools continue to play an important role in the inspection process, but, because of the unique issues with castings as noted above, they cant always be relied upon for the complete dimensional inspection that may be required. In addition to typical hand tools, Spokane Industries uses both a traditional, table-based Mitutoyo CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) that has a 24×24x18 working volume and a Faro-Arm with an 8-foot sphere working volume.

The traditional CMM is primarily used for the measurement of smaller, investment castings produced in our lost-wax facility as well as for the castings that are further processed by machining. The Faro Arm is a portable, articulating-arm CMM that allows for much more detailed and complete measurements than would be possible with either hand tools or the traditional CMM. Spokane Industries utilizes a Faro Arm that has an accuracy of plus or minus .003 of an inch. Although this accuracy is not as precise as a standard, table-based CMM it is more than acceptable for the tolerances usually applied to steel and iron castings.

The Faro Arms measurement software contains all the standard measurement tools that are common in most measurement software packages: plane, line, distance, circle, etc., but the Faro Arm gives the dimensional inspector the ability to digitally trace the contours of the casting and compare the CAD data directly against the trace. This tracing capability of the Faro Arm is accomplished by moving the tip of the arm against the feature of the casting that needs measuring.

The software will record the path of the tip as digital points or small, stitched-line segments. These points or line segments can then be measured in the software. Because of this free-form recording of the actual shape of the casting within the software, the dimensional inspector is able to record the true shape of the casting that can be measured, viewed on-screen, emailed for review, and rechecked even if the casting is no longer present. These features allow Spokane Industries quicker, more accurate dimensional inspections of castings that can be communicated with our customers via traditional dimensional reports, CAD/actual casting scan overlay, or a combination of both.

David Jolin, Quality Assurance Manager at Spokane Industries states, Another advantage of this scanning capability is to reverse-engineer existing castings that may not have a blueprint or cad-data. This is especially helpful if a customer has only a casting to provide to Spokane Industries to copy. Spokane Industries can scan the casting with the Faro Arm, generate a blueprint and CAD model and submit these back to the customer for review and approval. Once approved, Spokane Industries would then create the pattern for the molding operation, and then pour a first part sample. This sample can then be confirmed back to the created and approved blueprint, as well as against the scan of the original part.

The realm of dimensional inspection has moved far beyond the days of hand-written dimensional reports listing the results to the nearest fraction of an inch. The advancements that the digital age and computer-aided inspection systems have spawned allow us to produce parts and inspect them with more detail and precision than ever before. This increased detail results in a broader understanding of the casting process that encourages engineers to design even more complex castings. As customer expectations mature, so does the ability of our QA department to meet and exceed them.

DIY Solar Power Reduces Energy Bills by Hundreds

June 28th, 2009
by Alexis Jameson

You can reduce the amount you spend at home and save money by starting a DIY solar power project. In doing so, you will also be helping the environment by producing less pollutants and cutting out fossil fuel emissions into the environment.

It is not very expensive to invest in a solar panel for your home. First, you will need to check that the project you choose is suited to you, such as how big the project is and how committed you are. It’s always easy to start with a simple project. You will still see significant savings on your energy bills and would have invested in protecting yourself from the ever rising energy costs.

To reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions we produce we just need to make a few modifications in how energy is used in our homes. A lot of the energy is used in heating or cooling the home so being aware of that we can start to look at solutions in reducing the usage.
